Dedication! Devotion! A finished object!
Spend eight hours in digital community over an early Summer weekend working on a quilt : Improvising with ripped strips of fabric
We’ll look at the histories of strip quilts and dream up new futures for how we name our own quilt squares and finished quilts
No rulers no rules no rotary cutters
(unless you’re into that)
We’ll make a crib sized quilt in two days! Its possible! It’s magic!
with 2 and 3 part payment plans
Recording available forever

DAY TWO: Work session and group sharing!
We will use Zoom in creative ways to develop a sense of togetherness in the digital container, you can always keep your camera off or choose to not participate in any part of class
YOU WILL NEED:
Fabric scraps to make the front
One piece of fabric for the back measuring two inches bigger than your batting (crib size is 60 by 45) - you could prepare this before class or make it in class- I like to use a piece of muslin this size
Batting - I prefer Dream Cotton
Scissors
Sewing Machine
Embroidery Floss
Straight pins
Basting Spray
Optional : wonder for the binding (can also use straight plans)
Disclaimer : I am not an expert sewer or seamstress, I am merely a person who loves the art of putting together and taking apart. I am also someone who love blankets, composition, staying warm, and being together with other people looking to have conversations around art making. I believe in dismantling the idea that quilting is difficult, impossible, needs measuring, needs patterns.
This class is set up in a way to encourage your own self research, to encourage you to set your own pace and find your own way. This is purposeful. I believe in you.
I’d also like to name some of my real life quilting teachers and mentors : Eliza Fernand and Katherine Ferrier, Mary Ann Pettway and China Pettway As well as Rebecca Scattergood Savery’s friendship quilts, old Swedish quilts, my blanket making grandmothers Marlys Parrott and Alice Cook, and so many more shape makers past and present and future.
You will want to be able to :
- Thread your machine
- Wind a bobbin / replace the bobbin
- Sew a straight line
Don’t know how to do any of those things? Search the model of your sewing machine and the above tasks on YOUTUBE and you’ll be surprised how swiftly you can teach yourself!
Common troubleshooting things to familiarize yourself with:
- A jammed bobbin
- Tension
- It’s mostly bobbin related problems that come up for people!
“I really like Cody’s teaching style and the opportunity to learn from and share with other people! I also liked that this class was less traditional than other crafting type classes which are very intimidating and exclusive! Cody introduced me/the class to tons of different quilting traditions and inspired me to do a deep dive into my own culture’s quilting traditions (African American). If it wasn’t for this class I wouldn’t have learned that or learned about Gee’s Bend or done my own research to find out about the history of enslaved women and quilts”
“It felt like a welcoming space for everyone to question, make mistakes, and laugh; I loved the outside of class sewing time; small group breakout sessions were lovely!”

WHO IS TEACHING THIS CLASS?
Consider this before you sign up - when signing up you are consenting to taking a class with a tornado person - This class is taught by Cody Cook-Parrott, an artist and writer, who has been self employed and teaching online classes since 2017.
Cody Cook‑Parrott builds long‑horizon creative systems—spanning writing, quilting, movement, and teaching—without leaning on social media. Their work centers attention, a steady pace, and design‑forward tools that let artists finish and share work in a way that actually feels like living.
Cody is not a therapist, mental health professional, trauma informed facilitator, or anything else that would give them credentials for talking about the brain and how it figures out how to plan a day.
They are a hermit and a social person and many things and skilled at planning as a Gemini, Human Design Manifestor, Queer person, freak, and artist. They love to create fun and joyful containers for figuring out how to live in the world as an expert of nothing, a devotee to the mystery.
Many of the lessons in this class are borrowed by and inspired by healing with ADHD, 12 step rooms, spiritual practice, The Artist’s Way, and more
See terms and services for all online class here.

ZOOM ROOM
What this means is you'll have to take what you like and leave the rest! Not everything will work for every person, this container will, however, empower you to have the information to mold and fit to your specific needs and desires.
It will also help you determine the difference between when you are just beating yourself up for not "doing something you said you would do - and shifting into a space of awe and devotion.
This part might activate you - that's good: may the pushing back guide you closer to yourself. See you there!
A final note on the energy of the Zoom room:
This could be a small group, it could be a huge group, your ex might be there or your old neighbor. The mystery of digital spaces will invite us into our beautiful boundaries. Honor your physical and emotional needs and shift them throughout sessions : camera on / camera off. Participate in the chat exercises or don't. Face your camera to show us a plant the whole time. This is your experience!
Many Blessings - Cody
