ABOUT THIS COURSE In this two hour workshop we will explore the ways that the world, with it's constant overwhelm of news, natural disasters, social pressures, illusions of the demands of technology, combined with the internal overload of caring for the self, our families, our traumas, ourselves, our practices, our earning, and our attention - can leave us feeling behind, unloveable, unavailable, burnt out, and completely separate from what we are devoted to.

Discipline is an important part of any art practice, says ... most people who write about art. When I do my morning pages many days in a row not only am I in a state of abundant channeling, I am also in a flow of doing the same thing everyday which builds my self esteem. However, when I miss a day, the inner critic runs wild and it is almost impossible to return sometimes. This feeling seeps into any of my other modalities of art making. If I haven't sat down in "so long" to do the thing I was once disciplined at, I feel worthless and uneasy and go into compare and despair.

Devotion is the only way back. Let me take you where I go! And here is the thing - devotion expands our capacity for more. To take in more of the world, to show up more frequently, and to turn our art and our work into an offering of service to those who could benefit of its presence in the world.

This workshop is to bring you out of smallness, into the public sphere of your own world, and push through creative and emotional blocks through cultivating devotion, new habits, and a sprinkle of discipline on top of the sundae of awe.

TOOLS WE WILL WORK TO IMPLEMENT ◭ Creating a balance of awareness of what is going on on the outside and the inside

◭ Separating the inner and outer landscapes of experience

◭ Clarity around what we are devoted to, so that when discipline goes out the window we know what we are returning to

◭ Moving from generosity to responsibility and mutual aid through money, time, and energy

◭ Replacing negative self talk with action

◭ Mapping out manifestos for our work and practice

◭ Devotional list making practices

◭ Noticing exercises for naming our experiences of overwhelm

◭ What is happening right now and what was happening before

If you’re feeling stuck and like you can’t even sit down to SEE what you are devoted to, let alone bring it into your art : this workshop is for you.

Accountability is a way to expand our devotion and commitments : consider sharing the link to class with a friend to join you.

QUESTIONS

Q : I'm not an artist, can I take this class?

A: Yes you can! Anyone who wants to tend to what they are devoted to

Q : I feel really strongly that I love beating myself up when I am not disciplined and sometimes this even works - will I like this class?

A : Great question! I love that you know what you love : beating yourself up! I too have spent a lot of time in this space, and if that's where you're at you might think this class is REALLY annoying. This is class is WAY less about NOT being disciplined (I love discipline really!) It's about seeing what you are excited about and how to bring that into your life even when shutting down feels "better"

Q : If my distractions keep me safe and I really want to hold on to them and don't like when other people have breakthroughs should I take this class? Also will you be able to solve all of my self doubt?

A : No

Q : What if I have literally one ounce of the willingness to be willing to get rid of some cruel self talk, should I take this class? Will I leave feeling empowered and inspired?

A : Yes :)

WHO IS TEACHING THIS CLASS?

Consider this before you sign up - when signing up you are consenting to taking a class with a tornado person - This class is taught by Cody Cook-Parrott, an artist and writer, who has been self employed and teaching online classes since 2017.

Cody is not a therapist, mental health professional, trauma informed facilitator, or anything else that would give them credentials for talking about the brain and how it figures out how to plan a day.

They are a hermit and a social person and many things and skilled at planning as a Gemini, Human Design Manifestor, Queer person, freak, and artist. They love to create fun and joyful containers for figuring out how to live in the world as an expert of nothing, a devotee to the mystery.

Many of the lessons in this class are borrowed by and inspired by healing with ADHD, 12 step rooms, spiritual practice, The Artist’s Way, and more

Cody absolutely loves teaching about how art, improvisation, creative practice, and devotion all intersect with each other. How discipline is one of our most beautiful guiding forces, and how if we don't have devotion as an integrative practice we can lose sight of what it is we are attempting to pay attention to. For the past five years they have been researching, gathering information, and exploring how to access devotion in my own practice : of being a human, an artist, and a teacher.

They are passionate about helping others do the same. They also talk with my hands.

ENERGIES OF THE
ZOOM ROOM

Whether you are neurodivergent, ADHD, have a mood disorder, chronic pain, the list goes on - how much access we have to our relationship with overwhelm, distraction, and shutting down is dependent on many factors. It is important to remember I am facilitating as an artist, not as a therapist or someone trained within modalities of mental health.

What this means is you'll have to take what you like and leave the rest! Not everything will work for every person, this container will, however, empower you to have the information to mold and fit to your specific needs and desires.

It will also help you determine the difference between when you are just beating yourself up for not "doing something you said you would do - and shifting into a space of awe and devotion.

This part might activate you - that's good: may the pushing back guide you closer to yourself. See you there!

A final note on the energy of the Zoom room:

This could be a small group, it could be a huge group, your ex might be there or your old neighbor. The mystery of digital spaces will invite us into our beautiful boundaries. Honor your physical and emotional needs and shift them throughout sessions : camera on / camera off. Participate in the chat exercises or don't. Face your camera to show us a plant the whole time. This is your experience!

Many Blessings - Cody

It is my hope that this class empowers you to get really clear on how your personal devotions intersect with how you show up in the world : as generous, vibrant, hopeful makers of experience, spaces, and art.

To finding ways of continued devotion and how this goes directly back into your communities : digitally, in real life, and beyond.

As with anything I teach I hope you can apply what you like and leave the rest - may this short course bring you closer to yourself.
